Spirit of Aviation Week
Remote Scenario-based Simulation Training
During Spirit of Aviation Week (SOAW) a select group of volunteer certified flight instructors from the Society of Aviation and Flight Educators (SAFE) and the National Association of Flight Instructors (NAFI) will provide remote simulation training to pilots of home based Redbird aviation training devices (ATD's).
Before you schedule a training session, let's make sure your simulator is ready. Please complete the form on the right to confirm you meet the technical requirements to participate in the SOAW remote instruction program.
Sim Qualification
Qualified Instructors come to You
Challenging times can drive innovation, and general aviation is leading the way by offering scenario-based simulation training during EAA Spirit of Aviation Week.
Certified flight instructors from SAFE and NAFI will provide remote instruction to qualified home-based Redbird ATD's. Just make sure your Redbird hardware and software is up to date and provide an independent device with an HD camera. Instructors will connect to this device via the ZOOM meeting platform so they can communicate with you and view your sim.

Remote Training Tools
If your Redbird ATD is up to date and equipped with Navigator 3.0 or above you can participate in the SOAW remote instruction program.
Instructors will use ZOOM to connect to an independent device on your end equipped with an HD Webcam so that they can view your sim. They will also have the capability of logging onto your simulator with Redbird Connect to view your aircraft performance, configuration and other pertinent flight data.
The 90-minute remote training session includes a complete debriefing with CloudAhoy.
Set up your training environment, submit the qualification form and then schedule your Tech Check. In the meantime choose the missions you want to fly so you'll be ready to make your choice after you successfully complete this initial session.
Professionally Developed Flight Simulation Missions
The thirteen (13) simulation missions designated for Spirit of Aviation Week are a rich combination of exercises and scenarios. Exercises are designed for skill building while scenarios require judgement calls by the pilot in training (P-I-T). All are challenging and fun to fly.
Mission Exercise Bundles
Choose from three simulation mission bundles of VFR and IFR exercises.

VFR Bundle
Includes five (5) VFR mission exercises. Deal with density altitude in the mountains of Idaho and then try to land your Cessna on an aircraft carrier. A good VFR workout.
IFR Bundle
Three (3) exercises designed to remove rust and revive some muscle memory. Shoot a DME Arc approach, fly an LP+V into Kitty Hawk or wear out runway 30 at Long Beach.
VFR / IFR Bundle
A collection of four (4) of our most popular missions. Choose from two (2) VFR missions and / or two (2) IFR exercises. Fly one several times or as many as you can in 90 minutes.
Mission Scenarios
Mission scenarios are to mission exercises what practice is to a game. These VFR and IFR simulation missions require the judgement of a PIC and the planning begins on the ground. Your instructor is there to help but everything is your call. Good luck.

Half Moon Bay
Scenario Type: VFR
Summary: It's Friday night, and the sky is clear. Your challenge as pilot in command is to navigate the airspace between you and your destination. There’s Class B & C airspace all around you, even a wildlife refuge with a minimum crossing altitude with which to contend. Plot your course.

Shenandoah Sortie
Scenario Type: VFR
Summary: If you can get from Front Royal to New Market, VA (8W2) in time, your airplane will get the avionics repair it needs. The weather is currently VFR and should be OK all the way to your destination. No worries, you've made this this flight many times before. Let's get going.

Long Hot Summer
Scenario Type: VFR
Summary: It's a hot August day, and the weather is technically VFR, but there are scattered thunderstorms reported in the area. The terrain is flat along your route so if you need to dip down below the scud, you should be alright. Just watch out for billboards along NC 53.

Pilot in Command
Scenario Type: IFR
Summary: You’re headed from Redding KRDD) to Arcata KACV), California for a business meeting. KRDD is marginal VFR, but the TAFs are calling for LIFR all along the Northern California coast, so you’ll need to be on your game for the arrival. Your aircraft has a full tank of fuel and you’re the only one on board. It’s just you and your briefcase.
Escape from Berlin
Scenario Type: IFR
Summary: It’s been a great visit with friends and family over the Fourth of July weekend in Berlin, New Hampshire but everybody’s ready to get back home to Vermont. The weather forecast shows that while you will be in IMC for most of the climb you should be on top for the cruise portion of the flight. And it looks like you've got a tailwind!
