Training at SoCal

The SoCal region offers some of best flying weather in the USA with more VFR days per year than any other part of the country.  The Santa Paula Airport (KSZP) is located in Ventura County and offers a southern California vibe while maintaining a small town feel.

Great Weather

Southern California offers some of the best flying weather in the country.  Folks travel long distances to train here for the number of VFR days.

Aircraft

CP Aviation has over 20 airplanes in their training fleet including Cessnas (150, 152, 172), Citabrias and a Super Decathlon.  All carefully maintained.

Flight Simulation

Aviation Instruction, run by Master CFI Michael Phillips and located at the Camarillo Airport (KCMA), has a state of the art Redbird MCX for flight training.

Frequently asked questions

How do I best prepare?

Maintain flexibility:  the DO and FLY parts are subject to equipment availability and weather conditions so your schedule may change.

Be adaptable:  Your instructor can modify the training exercises based your progress and needs while still maintaining course objectives.

Plan ahead: Bring your pilot certificates, medical, logbook, flight gear, and anything else your instructor requests for the DO and FLY
parts.

Is this for IFR as well?

Yes!  Loss of control in flight (LOC-I) can just as readily happen in the clouds.  We've got a special modified syllabus for doing the course with a view limiting device.

How much does it cost?

The LEARN part (Part 1) is fixed at $149. The DO and FLY (Parts 2 & 3) are based on the published hourly rates of the training resources (e.g., flight simulator, airplane rental, fuel), the instructor, and the estimated amount of time required to complete each of these parts based on the pathways that you take.

Other types of training?
CP Aviation specializes in Emergency Maneuver Training (EMT®) as well as aerobatic instruction and tailwheel training.  Aviation Instruction at KCMA offers instrument training in their FAA approved Redbird MCX.  Consider adding on more training while you're there.
Where is this available?

We plan to expand to other parts of the country once we establish a firm foundation at each of the three Centers.

If you'd like to have the opportunity to take Intro to Stalled Flight, and other future LEARN-DO-FLY courses at a training center near you, let us know.

Please complete and submit the form.  Thank you.

How long is the training?
As they say in general aviation, it depends.  Typically the DO and FLY parts can be accomplished over a couple of days but the FLY part is weather dependent.  However, the DO part can be accomplished in any conditions and the SoCal climate generally favors good year round flying weather.
Can I use my airplane?
Yes, provided that it is acceptable with your designated expert trainer and appropriate for the course syllabus.  Although using an airplane with which you are familiar is a benefit, your airplane may not be suitable or approved for all the maneuvers in this program.  Check with your flight instructor.
Where will I be training?

Your in-airplane training will take place at CP Aviation located at the Santa Paula Airport (KSZP).  Flight simulation training will be conducted at Aviation Instruction based at the Camarillo Airport (KCMA).

How to schedule training?
Upon completion of the LEARN part of the course, you'll get access to your Experts' schedules and methods for booking your DO and FLY sessions.
Places to stay?
There are a number of hotels and Airbnb's in the area with a wide range of rates.  Call the main desk at CP Aviation for recommendations at 805-525-2138.
