6.  Course Scenario

About the Scenario
  • Purpose and Method

    We've included a scenario flight in the course to give you the opportunity to learn more from watching Doug fly it and then do more by flying it yourself.  

    This is where you can really begin to embed the best practices and procedures acquired from the lessons.

    You can fly this course scenario on any simulation device that is capable of replicating the prescribed situation (see 'Setting Up and Flying the Scenario' in the "You Fly It" section of this Lesson).  Recreate the weather exactly as Doug flies it or set your own conditions.

    Flying the scenario on the PilotEdge network will give you a more complete scenario experience.  You can also take advantage of the CloudAhoy application to evaluate and share your flights with Doug and fellow members.

  • The Situation

    Doug's M20M Mooney Bravo is parked on the ramp near the Signature FBO at KSBA.  Ceilings and visibility are near absolute minimums at both Santa Barbara and KOXR.  Winds favor a takeoff from RW 25 and you've filed for the TEC Route (SBAN35) which takes you to KOXR via KWANG - CMA at 3,000'.

  • Objective

    Execute a successful IFR flight from KSBA to KOXR.  

    > File a flight plan using the TEC route system.

    > Include sound alternatives to your flight plan prior to departure and enroute.  

    > Demonstrate command and proper phraeseology with all aspects of ATC communications.  

    > Choose the best instrument approach available given conditions at the destination.  Land safely.

    Follow along with Doug as he flies the complete scenario flight using many of the best practices he has shared in the course lesson plans.

    Fly the scenario yourself.  Recreate the same weather conditions Doug encounters or create your own. 

  • Success Criteria

    Fly the scenario in all three modes to complete the progress circle. 

    1.  Fly the scenario on your own.  Judge your own performance.

    2.  Fly the scenario using PilotEdge under the watchful eye of a controller.

    3.  Record and upload your scenario flight(s) into CloudAhoy and share select sorties with Doug and the greater course community on Slack #art-flying-ifr or the Facebook Group.

Set Up

 

  • Aircraft and Equipment

    Doug is flying the stock FSX Mooney M20M Bravo.  It is a /A configuration (analog panel - no GPS) equipped with a KAP-140 autopilot.  He'll be navigating with raw data (needles only) from ground based VOR's and radar vectors from ATC.  

    He has an EFB (iPad) for chart and approach plate reference only.  He is not using the 'ownship' function.  The Foreflight and CloudAhoy scenes from the videos were recorded by the production team and inserted post production.  They are intended for viewer reference.

  • About Doug's Simulation Device (PCATD) 

    Doug is flying the course scenario on a personal computer loaded with Microsoft Simulator X.  His machine is equipped with 8 MB of RAM and an NVIDIA graphics card.  He's using a single display.

    He's controlling the aircraft with a Logitech 3D Pro joystick, keyboard and mouse.  He has a Turtle Beach headset to communicate with the controllers at PilotEdge.  Although the auxillary radio stack is functional, he's using his mouse to manage the NAV/COM radios.  

    This set up is classified by the FAA as a PCATD or Personal Computer Aviation Training Device.

    The weather settings for Doug's scenario are global (same at both the departure and destination airports) and are as follows:

    KSBA:  Victor 2315 Z  /  KOXR:  Romeo 2335 Z *

    Celings:  300' Overcast

    Visibility: 2 miles w/ Moderate Rain

    Wind:  248 / 08

    Temperature:  15  Dew point:  05

    Altimeter:  29.92

    *  During the filming of this scenario Microsoft FSX was reporting the KOXR ATIS incorrectly.
  • Flight Plan

    Doug has filed to KOXR via the SBAN 35 TEC Route (KWANG - CMA) at an altitude of 3,000'.

  • Clearance and Departure Procedure

    Fly runway heading, radar vectors KWANG, then as filed (KWANG-CMA).  Maintain 3,000.  Frequency 120.55.  Squawk 5024.

    Position your airplane on the North side of KSBA near the FBO ramp.  Doug was given taxi instructions to RW 25 via C / J.  Although the scenario video begins with the engine on and runups complete we recommend your executing a full startup procedure.
