VFR SCENARIO #11

Our Nation's Capital

Local Photo Flight

ATC_Icons_copy.png

You’ve been asked to fly someone who wants to photograph a golf course located deep inside complicated airspace.  It’s a nice VMC day and you’re feeling good about handling the airplane, but this place is located within the National Capital Region SFRA (Special Flight Rules Area).  Yikes!

You received a discrete transponder code and special frequency to communicate with ATC prior to taking off from KHEF.  You’re not only inside the SFRA but there’s the Dulles Airport (KIAD) Class B shelf over your head.  Bottom line, you’ve got to know what you’re doing and where you are at all times.  Oh yeah, there is a golf course to photograph too!

If you wander off course or violate the procedures you’ll get a free escort out of the area courtesy of Homeland Security and a phone number to copy and call when you land.

But don’t worry, these procedures are straightforward, the controllers are helpful and folks fly in this space all the time.  Now it’s your turn.  The golf course is about 5 miles to the west of KHEF, bearing approximately 290º.
